SUMMARY:Harmony & Music Circles
DESCRIPTION:How does the Harmony Circle work? You pick a song from a songbook of classic pop and folk songs from the 60s and 70s (Crosby\, Stills\, Nash & Young; The Beatles; John Denver; Simon & Garfunkel; Peter\, Paul\, & Mary; etc.) then our talented guitarist will lead us through the verses and we’ll create our best harmonies. Afterwards\, we move to the next person in the circle and repeat! Fun\, lots of opportunity to sing your heart out to songs you long to sing. We provide the songbooks. \nHow does the Music Circle work? Join several instrumentalists and singers in a “hootenanny”-style sing-along. You pick a song from Rise Up Singing (1\,200 to choose from) to lead\, or ask others to lead it. Each gets a turn to choose a song\, then we repeat. Often we have guitar\, banjo\, mandolin\, bass\, percussion\, autoharp\, and more—beginners to pros. Bring your book\, although we have extras. \nFor both circles\, anyone is welcome\, of all talent levels\, no pre-registration is required. \nHarmony Music Circle: Second Friday of every month\, 7-9pm. Join 20+ singers and 1-2 guitars to sing the great harmony songs of the ‘60s and ‘70s. \nMusic Circle: Third Friday of every month\, 7–9pm. Bring your voices\, Rise Up Singing songbooks (some extras will be there)\, enthusiasm\, friends\, and instruments (all are welcome!). \nSecond & Third Fridays • 7pm • Free • More information here.

Invite a neighbor and join us for an important Community Conversation at Friendly House and together we’ll learn practical\, proven strategies to prepare ourselves\, our families\, and our neighborhoods. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nSteve Eberlein\, Preparedness Educator + Advocate: Formerly of American Red Cross and now a professional emergency planning consultant\, Steve will present and take your questions.\n\n\nInformation Tables: Fire and Earthquake Preparedness Experts and Suppliers and representatives from seismic upgrade companies\, schools\, vet clinics and more will be present to answer your questions. \n\n\nPreparedness Supplies: Pre-order or purchase at the event durable emergency water storage containers and reduced cost ‘go bags’ for pickup at the event. Stay tuned for details.\n\n\n…and more!\n\nWhen you know what to expect\, you can be prepared — and when you’re prepared\, you don’t need to be scared! A prepared neighborhood is a safe and resilient neighborhood. \n3–5:30pm • Sunday\, May 18th • Free • Friendly House: 1737 NW 26th Ave \nParticipants available at tables in the gym after the presentation will include: \nAmerican Red Cross – Representatives will hand out their comprehensive preparedness manuals and tell you how to become “Red Cross Ready” for an emergency\, meaning how to follow their simple steps in advance to ensure you can weather a crisis safely and comfortably. Being prepared may not prevent a disaster\, but it will give you confidence to meet the challenge. \nThe City of Portland Bureau of Emergency Management – City officials from the PBEM will be on hand to explain how they promote readiness\, coordinate response\, and build resilience for Portland. The PBEM develops and implements strategic planning\, programs\, and policies to continually advance the city’s mitigation\, preparedness\, response\, and recovery capabilities. \nPortland Fire & Rescue – The Public Information Officer of the Portland Fire & Rescue Bureau will provide information on fire safety\, Neighborhood Emergency Training (NET)\, and emergency preparedness. \nFirewise Community Program – Representatives from this program will explain how any neighborhood can be at risk of wildfire (not just areas near forests or wildlands – wildfires can travel through parks\, greenbelts\, and even jump into urban areas under the right conditions due to winds that can carry embers ahead of a wildfire). Whether you live in a rural area\, a suburb\, or the middle of the city\, Firewise principles can help keep your home and community safer. \nPortland Public Schools – A representative from PPS will explain how the public schools in our area are set up to handle a disaster such as an earthquake or wildfire\, as well as how to prepare your child and what to expect from your child’s school in the aftermath of a disaster.  \nPet Preparedness – A veterinarian from NW Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital and the Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator from Dove Lewis will discuss pet-based emergency kits and provide information and hand-outs on pet preparedness. \nSeismic Retrofit Contractors – NW Seismic\, whose primary focus is to strengthen homes to a degree at which homeowners can shelter in place after a moderate-to-high seismic event\, will offer a variety of solutions and services to meet homeowners’ structural foundation needs as well as gas valve shut off installations and hot water tank strapping. \nSupplies For Sale –   Are you Redfora (Ready for Anything)?
